Gurutzpe, part of the INZU group, is a leading company in the machine tool industry, specializing in providing turning solutions for large-scale parts in the metal sector. Gurutzpe is currently facing a challenge related to the forging process, which involves shaping a material until the desired form of the part is achieved.

This process was traditionally performed manually by operators, often relying on subjective decisions based on their own criteria and experience in measuring, evaluating, and aligning the parts. As a result, the final geometry of the part was not always perfect. This type of production system requires precise alignment at the start of the turning process to ensure flawless finished parts.

The collaborative project between Gurutzpe, Vicomtech, and Sariki aims to integrate an automated measurement and data analysis process within the machine, optimizing alignment and production, and achieving precise diameters in the produced parts.

PROPOSED SOLUTION

To address this challenge, the implementation of a 3D digitizing system through laser triangulation mounted on the lathe's tool carriage has been proposed. The system incorporates sensors that enable a three-dimensional reconstruction of the raw parts, facilitating the calculation of the optimal displacement needed to minimize material waste during machining.

Additionally, using Vicomtech's Geomlib library, a digital twin has been developed—a digital prototype of the machine that simulates the real machine's operation. This digital prototype of the turning machine improves the quality and precision of the produced parts and significantly optimizes both the startup and the overall manufacturing process efficiently.

RESULT

The collaboration between Gurutzpe, Vicomtech, and Sariki has resulted in an innovative solution that integrates cutting-edge technology into the production process. Through the use of laser triangulation and the digital twin, the process of measurement and alignment has been automated, significantly improving production efficiency and precision.

This project not only met the client's expectations but also laid the foundation for future applications in the machine tool industry. It highlights the value of collaboration between companies and the support of initiatives such as the Basque Industry program, funded by the Basque Government through SPRI.
